Restaurant Credit Card Processing

In this day and age, it is more surprising to walk into a store that does not allow credit card payment. Every one wants everything quick and easy. They want to purchase something in just a few clicks and have it delivered at home. This means that going online can dictate your business’s survival and that online purchases mean charge, credit, or debit card payment. The thing to remember when you choose to accept credit cards is that there are differences to the card and the machine used for it even if it’s all the same for the consumers. As a business-owner, you should know these differences. If you already know you need to accept credit cards at your restaurant, please give us a call to discuss the details.

The 3 different card payments are charge card, credit card, and debit card. A charge card may cost the business up to 6% plus transaction fee of the total selling price. If you, as a merchant, operates on 20-23% profit margin, that cost can be a great loss for you. This 6% loss on top of the cost of doing the business in every sale made is what small businesses are trying to avoid. This is why some businesses only accept credit and debut card payments but even those have different fee structures.

There are a few things to keep in mind when deciding to accept credit cards in your business especially when you are trying to avoid high rates. Opt for transactions that accepts swiping cards and not having to enter them manually. Try and limit on accepting only Mastercard or Visa for credit card payments, or debit cards. And avoid accepting, as much as possible, rewards credit cards. Why? Because processing this will put your fees to the mid-qualified tier, at least, and this means a 2% to as high as 4% fee. You wouldn’t want to look at your monthly statement and see that at least 29% of your sales were processed at at least the mid-qualified tier. But customers would not want to come up the counter knowing they can use a credit card only to find out that the card that they want to use is not acceptable. Keep in mind though that customers don’t bother with this things even if you explain but you must be firm sometimes.

The decision to accept and process payments using a credit card that needs to be entered manually is really up to the seller. There are fees to upgrading when accepting credit cards that does not swipe but make sure to evaluate all possibilities because the profits that you can gain by accepting could be significantly more than the fees incurred.
